What to Expect at a Chinese Get-together:

Filed Under:

  1. If you're of normal height, expect all your relatives to comment on how tall you are and how you just never seem to stop growing.

  2. Expect everyone to talk at the same time about the same thing. Very loudly. But the conversation will still somehow manage to make sense to everyone.

  3. The phrases "You didn't have to cook this much!" and "How will we ever finish all of this?" regardless of the amount of food present.

  4. Lots of discussions starting with "When I was a little boy/girl..."

  5. If there are teenagers present, expect the typical "So, which university/program do you want to get into?"

  6. Private school vs. public school debates.

  7. Moms exchanging recipes for American dishes (which they somehow manage to alter to make it more Asian.)

  8. Discussions about the following topics: university, school, good grades, your kids, other people's kids, China, communism, the economic recession, money, how to make more money, taxes, the government, the "old days", marriages and divorces, technology.

  9. Expect to leave at around 1 am the next morning.

LMFAO. It's so true, and it's happening right now at my house.

    I will blog about it.

Comments like "so have you got a nice Chinese boyfriend yet" and "don't you think you could lose some weight" are also popular ones at my house...

dude most of these are just characteristics of family get-togethers no matter what ethnicity. seriously minus the parts about making food dishes more asian, and my family has never debated about private and public schools, which is strange cause members of my family went to both. that and usually we leave before 1, but other than that very similar.

That is so true. I second Amanda, those 2 are quite common as well. But as usual, I shut my ears when these questions are blasted at me. :P

Ohhhhh yes, this post is pretty much the story of my adolescent weekends. And around April (college decisions revealed), the subject is always, "Where did you get accepted?" "Where are you going for college?" Ah, gotta love Asian parent gossip. :)

Haha, some of these struck me as very familiar to Arab gatherings -- especially #3!

The first one about height is priceless, though. xD

OMFGGG SO DAMN TRUE. Every single thing was a total hit. Happens EVERY time. I think I'm going to show this to my parents...

Something to say?
