A Love/Hate Relationship With Sawdust

Filed Under:

My house has become an obstacle course. When I wake up in the morning, I ninja myself out of my room by crouching and jumping over a pile of wood... only to trip on a wooden block on the way to the bathroom because I'm chuckling at how stealthy I was.

When I come home from school, I need to literally dance around all the pieces of wood that are in between the front entrance and the snack cupboard. (One day there was a huge stack of wood in front of it, and I nearly had a fit. It was the bag of chips left out on the counter that saved me.)

I should probably explain why there's so much wood in the house. My parents decided that we were going to remove all the carpet in the house and replace it with either hardwood or cork flooring. So that means.. THE ENTIRE SECOND FLOOR, THE STAIRS, AND HALF OF THE MAIN FLOOR. There have been workers here every single day for the past week, and it's still not done.

And don't even talk to me about sawdust.

Having OCD tendencies, I HATE it when things are messy... so you can only imagine what I look like everyday when I come home from school. If you can't, here's an image:

SAWDUST. EVERYWHERE. EVERYTHING SMELLING LIKE SAWDUST.  *brain explodes*

I used to LOVE the smell of sawdust, whenever I walked past the woodshop in school, I'd linger there a bit to smell the wood. But now... my relationship with sawdust is like the relationship between a sandwich and a locker.

It has become moldy.

Have home renovations ever given you this much grief?

I still love the smell of sawdust. :P But I've never had a house full of wood and sawdust.

Wow this dancing and ninja stuff sounds like fun! I should really come hang out and dance around some boxes and wood.

Also I didn't have so much hatred when I was having parts of my house re-done. More so inconvenience of having everyone in my family share a bathroom. I get to have that experience again when we redo yet another bathroom in my house.

You know, I can't recall what sawdust smells like off the top of my head. Obviously I've smelled it before, but I guess it didn't make a big enough impression on me so that I could remember it :P I'm sorry that sawdust and home renovations are giving you such grief though!

Are your parents doing the renovations on their own or did they hire professionals?

I can't stand the smell of sawdust at all! I always have the urge to sneeze.

Oh damn that must suck. My dad never let us live in our house if it's being majorly renovated. We usually move into one of our other houses or rent a house or something.

Sorry to hear about that, though.

:O That sounds horrible. :( Usually people move out when they get renovations don't they?

I can't say I've ever had renovations to even annoy me. :P We've always rented. :D

My parents had decided to get our bathrooms redone as well as other parts of the house. The contractor was a total mess so they fired him. The bathroom was NOT fixed for at least 3 months. And after that, we renovated the other half of the house they couldn't renovate (because it required skills that they did not have..).

This went on for a couple of years.
I've lost a couple of books, countless hair bands and have now stubbed the feeling out of my small toe, on both feet. :)

Not a big fan of sawdust smell or mess. I really hate when things are messy, especially on the floor.

Hope your floor will be all done soon so there won't be sawdust everywhere & you won't wake up to planks of wood.

Something to say?
